Meet Abdelrahman AlShakhshir, a fan of driving around town and testing the latest lunch spots with his friends, avid swimmer, self-therapy researcher and one of Aspire’s very own Senior Software Engineers.

What did you study?

I graduated from the University of Jordan with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Information Systems.

Why did you choose IT?

I’ve had a passion for computers in general ever since I was a kid! I always imagined that in the future, I would be sitting behind a computer all day being able to do fancy things on the internet. I guess I was right.

What are you particularly passionate about within the IT industry?

Mostly everything that involves web and mobile technologies! Funny enough, even though I am a frontend developer, I tend to lean more towards backend development.

Why Aspire?

I was actually lucky to start working at Aspire only 5 days after having my final exams at university. As soon as I walked into the office, I felt comfortable! Even during the interview process, I knew that I had to work here because it felt like a second home. Back in 2019, I actually ended up leaving Aspire for another work opportunity, but after 2 months I decided to come back. After all, once an Aspirer, always an Aspirer!

What does your typical working day look like?

I usually rush in the mornings and grab a cup of coffee before heading to the office (prior to the pandemic). Once I get to the office, I usually draft up my daily schedule and then start by checking my emails. After that, I start working on my daily tasks and the team has a daily stand-up meeting to see how every team member is progressing. Once the meeting is done, I have a chat with my colleagues before I start focusing on the technical tasks. Prior to the pandemic, we would also try to grab lunch outside of the office about two to three times a week in order to get a break from the routine and try out new places. I enjoy my break and always have another cup of coffee with my friends at Aspire in the afternoon. After break, I start working on my technical tasks, usually short/simple ones first, then some chunks of the more complex tasks. At the end of the day, my team meets again to check up on the progress/results of the day (I really miss having these in-person). I always try to attend these meetings. I also always try to be on call for any emergency technical production situation that needs to be addressed quickly.

How has your day-to-day changed since the pandemic?

I get to sleep more! But honestly, it actually has changed a lot. When the pandemic started, I was working the night shift with a Silicon Valley based client. I was going to swim daily and I would go out with friends during the day instead of after work at night. I also had more time to see family and friends.

What do you value the most about the company?

The continuous investment in infrastructure and resources for us to always be up to date with the latest technologies and software development methodologies. Furthermore, I really value the awesome and friendly work environment and of course the people!

What keeps you busy outside of work?

Mostly, whatever I stumble upon on YouTube. I also love driving around with my friends every day and I like to read a lot about human psychology, self-therapy and medical studies.

Abdelrahman driving around town.

If you had to choose one programming language to use for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

It would be JavaScript. JavaScript can get messy quickly if it’s not mastered, it’s a very easy to learn language but it’s hard to master. It’s the world of contribution and open-source libraries and it’s so open that you can actually build great things, or break them!

What was the path to your current role at Aspire?

I joined Aspire as a Fresh Graduate Quality Analyst. Within the first two months, I joined the Quality Engineering department and after a year, I moved to Software Engineering. After two years, I was promoted to senior position, where I am today as a Senior Software Engineer.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

A Cat, for no specific reason, I just adore lazy cats.

You have 10 seconds to impress someone. What do you tell them?

I would just give them a strong handshake and try to present myself in a creative and friendly way.

What is your favorite movie/series?

My favorite movie of all-time is ‘The Dictator’ by Sacha Baron Cohen and I also love sci-fi movies like ‘Inception’ and thrillers like ‘Shutter Island’. When it comes to series, I still don’t have a favorite, but I really enjoyed watching ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘Westworld’.

What’s your favorite song, singer or genre of music?

My all-time favorite song is ‘November Rain’ by Guns n’ Roses. I am pretty eclectic with my musical taste and I listen to pretty much all genres.

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

Travel all around Europe!

What excites you about the Aspire and what are your ambitions for the future?

I love the idea of being 6K miles away from users that use my code on a daily basis! The outsourcing world is a very cool thing. I would love to see Aspire expand even further and reach out to more European clients next. I have already gone to New York with work and would love to travel to Europe with work too.

Abdelrahman in NYC for an onsite client visit back in December, 2017.

If a genie appeared and gave you three wishes, what would they be?

  1. Go back in time to buy cheaper Bitcoins.
  2. Own a mansion around the Alps.
  3. To get taller by a few centimeters.

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

As a kid, I always had a deep-water phobia, but I conquered it with a lot of motivation and with the help of my two professional swimmer friends.

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

I passed a senior vacancy interview with one of our biggest US clients while I had only one week of knowledge of the required technology without any prior experience.

I was also able to lead a team in the QA department of 10 resources within the first year and a half of joining.

What superpower would you like to have?

Have a full neurological control of my brain.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Anything that has cream and cheese.

What’s your life philosophy?

Life has its ups and downs, it’s like a heartbeat, so no need to dwell on the past failures or disappointments, try to live in the moment because it’s the only thing that will help build your future.

Any tips for new graduates?

Keep on learning! Always invest some of your spare time to learn, build your self-confidence to give people a good first impression, because the first impression always lasts. Don’t try to be a perfectionist, it will only add an unnecessary stress to your life, it is due to our mistakes that we learn.  Lastly, always try to expand your professional circle, step away from “energy vampires”, try and surround yourself with people who give you energy and of course always enjoy the ride of life!

We are hiring!

Meet Doa’a Alkhateib https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/meet-doaa-alkhateib/ https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/meet-doaa-alkhateib/#respond Tue, 26 Jan 2021 11:11:37 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=13386

Meet Doa’a Alkhateib, Game of Thrones fan, avid bookworm, Pinterest addict and one of Aspire’s most talented Team Leads and Technical Architects.

What is your current position?

I am currently a Team Lead, leading the Broadleaf Commerce Team, where we implement back-end services and I am also a Technical Architect. I have been leading this team for about 7 years now. Initially, this was the first service oriented architecture team, however, as we move to newer technologies, I now lead the back-end team for supporting the commerce and checkout of one of our biggest US clients in the health and wellness sector.

Why did you choose IT?

I actually graduated as an Electrical Engineer. When I graduated, all my elective courses were in communication and back then, I wanted to work in a telecom company but I ended up being hired in the IT field. After a while, once I got more experience with software engineering, I noticed that I really loved this area and I started developing myself by learning specific technologies and topics that I felt were missing in my CV to get to where I wanted.

What are you particularly passionate about within your industry?

I like how the IT industry is making our lives easier by having everything automated and accessible with simple commands through applications and websites. Everything in the world now is moving towards automation and business process automation, we have a lot of things in our lives that can be improved by using IT. Everything nowadays depends on IT. At Aspire, I like the fact that you can be assigned to multiple projects. This way I keep learning continuously, I have so much space to grow in the future. Lastly, I love how IT isn’t specific when it comes to industry, you can be in any type of business and meanwhile, the technology will still be the same.

Why Aspire?

Right after I graduated, I worked for another company for 6 years as a Software Engineer. The company’s products were mainly related to the hospitality sector. I wanted to increase my skills and to become a part of a bigger company. Aspire is one of the biggest IT companies in Jordan, especially when it comes to the number of employees and dealing with global enterprise-level clients with the highest level of standards and processes. I wanted to move to a company with these standards, with the latest technologies, with efficient and global projects, so I applied to Aspire and I have been here ever since.

What does your typical day look like?

Every morning, I do my face and skincare routine and after that I have my coffee. Before quarantine, I would get dressed straight after my morning routine and come to work. I would open my laptop and ping my friends/colleagues so that we could have a morning coffee break together. After quarantine, I spend time with my mom and my sister having my morning coffee with them and 30 mins later I start working. In the morning I start by checking my emails, tasks and notifications. Straight after, we have a standard daily meeting with the whole team to go through all the details, tasks and complications, how we can improve and make enhancements. After that, everyone has tasks to complete. In the afternoon, we usually have back-to-back meetings with the client and in between the meetings, we complete our tasks. After work it depends on my mood, sometimes I like to relax and rest after a long day, other days I like to hang out with family and friends, sometimes I watch movies, and I usually catch up on social media at night.

Doa’a hanging out with her friends

Has your work routine changed since the beginning of the pandemic?

We are still working remotely. I actually prefer working from the office, I feel that dealing with people directly is easier when it’s done face-to-face. I had some problems in the beginning and I had to learn how to take some time off for myself. I would just work all of the time and this wasn’t helping with my anxiety, so I changed a couple things and included some breaks. I also really miss dressing up for work. My lunch break time has also changed to match my family’s lunch break time.

What do you value the most about the company?

Aspire is a great company where I learned about many different technologies. We have access to the latest technologies and we adopt the latest methodologies for our enterprise customers. I have learned so much when it comes to technical and strategic thinking. We are always up-to-date with the market and many times we are even ahead. The company culture/environment is also amazing, I have made friendships for life.

Doa’a and Aspire colleagues during one of the team outings

What keeps you busy outside of work?

I like reading a lot. When I have time, I download books that have good ratings and read them. I spend a lot of time with my family and friends. I also love decor and design, and due to this hobby, I end up spending a lot of time on Pinterest searching for interesting new designs, outfits and getting inspiration, keeping collections of all of the things I like.

I also enjoy being outdoors.

Doa’a and friends spending time outdoors

If you had to choose one programming language to use for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I prefer Java, I have only been using it for 2 years now but it’s one of the most robust and trending technologies in the market, it’s useful and also compatible with back-end services.

What was the path to your current role at Aspire?

I have been at Aspire for 9 years now. I joined as a Senior Software Engineer. After 2 years, I became a Team Lead. 3 years ago, I got promoted to an Architect position, however I also continue leading my team.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

It’s hard to choose just one, so I will choose 2 which are completely opposite, just like me: first one is a deer because they are feminine, cute, gracious and most people like deers and the second one is a lioness, because they are anxious, very protective and always ready to attack.

What is your favorite movie/series?

I am a big Game of Thrones fan. Lately, I have been watching How to Get Away with Murder and Prision Break. My favorite movie of all time is Inception.

What’s your favorite song, singer or type of music?

I love arabic music! My favorite singer is Amr Diab.

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

I would like to open my own business one day.

What are your ambitions for Aspire?

I want to move to the next level and I want to become the first female Director at Aspire one day.

How do you believe Aspire can make an impact on our industry?

Aspire is doing a great job in outsourcing and as we move into the consulting space, this will be a great addition to our services.

If a genie appeared and gave you three wishes, what would they be?

  • To keep myself, my family and friends in good health and safe
  • To open my own business
  • To get rich

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

Being self-independent, buying my own house and helping my mom.

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

Getting promoted to an Architect, being successful at my job and always looking to improve myself

What superpower would you like to have?

I would like to read people’s minds

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Toasted peanuts

Do you have any goals you want to achieve in 2021?

In 2021, I hope to change some habits, improve my anxiety, and focus on my mental health more. Plan properly for my future dreams. I hope that the pandemic will end soon so that I am able to have a girls trip to Europe with my friends.

How do you think the work environment will change after the end of the pandemic?

Personally, I prefer to work from the office, but I believe that a hybrid approach will be implemented in the future for all companies. Full-time remote work can be done, but you still need to meet people in-person for mental health purposes and to develop social skills, team outings, developing relationships, among other things. A hybrid approach will be flexible for both employees and employers.

Any tips for new graduates?

I always tell new graduates to build their skills. What they have learned in university is important, but real-life experiences are very different compared to the educational theory they learned. They also need to understand and accept advice from someone who is senior and to be able to receive feedback as something positive. We always need to keep learning. Everyone that works in IT needs to keep learning continuously, even if you are a Team Lead, a Director, a CEO, etc. I feel that new graduates don’t know how to take direction well, so come with an open mind, be open to hearing, learning and receiving feedback.

Meet Ahmad Younis https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/meet-ahmad-younis/ https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/meet-ahmad-younis/#respond Tue, 17 Nov 2020 13:08:15 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=13301

Most of you are used to our Life @ Aspire series, however, today we decided to do something different and we interviewed Ahmad Younis for our first ever Life Post Aspire blog series.

Meet Ahmad Younis, ex-Aspirer, QA Engineer, fitness and travel fanatic, now living out of California.

Tell me a bit about yourself?

Currently, I am a QA Engineer for Roblox. I have been with Roblox for the past 2 years now, living in the Bay Area, San Francisco, California. Before that, I was also working in the Bay Area for another company (Kyocera), where I stayed for almost 3 years. Prior to moving to the US, I was in Poland for a little over a year, working for another IT company (Astrafox) as a QA Tester. Before Poland, I was at Aspire for 5 years, where I started as a Fresh Graduate.

IMG_1359

Ahmad, at the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, USA

Why did you choose IT?

I graduated in Software Engineering from Al Rafidain University College in Iraq back in 2004. I chose IT because I always knew that I wanted to work in this field and that I would have many opportunities to grow. Right after graduation, I moved to Jordan where I started as a Fresh Graduate at Aspire as a QA Trainee. The company was still relatively small when I joined, we had about 40 people in 2004. My English skills weren’t great, so I started learning English, how to write emails and working on my communication skills. After work, some of my Aspire colleagues helped me practice English which made me feel highly motivated. I did this in order to advance in my career and to understand our client’s culture as I was working with an American client at the time. All of my hard work paid off and after a few years, I became a QA Supervisor and began leading projects. After 5 years at Aspire, I decided to move to Poland for my next career opportunity.

What are you particularly passionate about within your industry?

I love QA! It is a very big field. There is QA Networking for testing, coding for testing, manual testing and many more. All of this requires you to think outside of the box, to think of possible scenarios and imagine how the end user would think, keep working to find bugs and test everything. I am also fascinated by automation now and how this might tie into QA. The most important thing is to be passionate about learning, as things keep changing really fast.

Why did you join Aspire?

I joined Aspire to get an internship opportunity. Luckily, I got a full-time job after my internship. I developed a love for QA and for the Aspire family throughout my time there. I left after 5 years of working at Aspire back in 2009 and believe it or not, after 11 years I still keep in contact with my Aspire colleagues until today. Every time that I come to Jordan, I go back to the office for a quick visit to remember the good old days.

ahmadattheoffice

Ahmad during one of his visits to the Aspire offices, Jordan

What does your typical day currently look like?

I start every morning with yoga. I go to work, grab a coffee and get started. During lunchtime, I usually go to the gym. We have a gym at the office and after my workout and a quick bite, I feel ready and energized for my afternoon meetings ahead. We have an open plan office, similar to Aspire’s layout which is a really friendly and nice environment. After work, I usually go out with my coworkers or friends for a drink or dinner. Now during COVID-19 times, I have been mainly staying in as much as possible.

How has it been moving around so much?

When I moved from Iraq to Jordan, I noticed some differences even though both are Arab countries. We also have a huge cultural mix of people in Jordan and especially at Aspire where people are really friendly. The move from Jordan to Poland was a big one, the work climate in Europe was very different to Jordan and it helped me to understand different cultures and especially how to explain things in a very brief way, how to get “straight to the point”. When I moved from Poland to the US, it was a whole different experience, and a more fast-paced environment. We have a lot of working-meetings where we agree and make changes that are needed during the actual presentations/meetings.

What did you value the most about Aspire?

The quality that we give to clients and the quality of the employees are very high.

What is your favorite movie/series?

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is my favorite movie and Friends is definitely my favorite TV series.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to go out and meet new people, make new friends through social networking and I like to travel, especially around California. I love watching the sunset at the Golden Gate Bridge, I also go to Yosemite National Park quite a lot.

IMG_1214

Ahmad, going for a walk with his friend’s dog in San Francisco, USA

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

Travel as much as I can.

IMG_0141

IMG_0893

Ahmad in Sydney, Australia

What, in your opinion, are the most important issues in the IT industry?

Too many languages and way too many devices which complicates things a lot, especially when it comes to testing.

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

To always stay healthy, I really focus on this a lot.

IMG_6521

Ahmad cycling in Vail, Colorado, USA

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

Where I am now, how far I got. I am super happy and proud of what I have achieved. Back in Iraq, I didn’t even have an internet connection at home and I have built so much from where I started.

What superpower would you like to have?

I would love to be able to time-travel. Within 2 minutes I could be in another country, imagine how cool that would be.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pasta. I LOVE pasta! All types of pasta.

What’s your life philosophy?

You are not special because of who you are but because of what you do and the most important thing is to be happy, to enjoy what you are doing and be mentally well.

IMG_8882

Ahmad going on an adventurous helicopter ride in Maui, Hawaii, USA

Most memorable moment at Aspire?

I felt very special when I moved from an intern to becoming a full-time employee. I felt valuable. We also had so many fun times. I remember when the whole company went on a field trip to Wadi Rum, we took a bus out there and everyone was singing along the way. It was great!

If you could choose one technology to use for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I would like to have a self-driving car. That way I wouldn’t have to worry about traffic and could get more things done during that time.

Were you affected by COVID-19?

The US was one of the most affected countries. Everybody had to work from home and for quite a while. In the beginning, things were hard, especially because we didn’t know for how long the pandemic would be. A lot of people died, luckily nobody that I know personally, but a lot of people got affected mentally and from a work perspective, I really missed my social life and face-to-face interactions with people.

How do you think life will be post-pandemic?

Working from home is going to be the new model, especially for tech companies. We know this is where we are headed but we are still waiting to see if this will be optional or if it will be hybrid. A hybrid model in my opinion would be the best combination, socializing is very important for me.

Any tips for new graduates?

From my experience, the most important thing is to think about the skill sets and what you need to improve. I felt that my english skills were lacking and I really worked hard to improve this to get to where I am today. It is also important to think strategically and not just on a job title, think about communication skills, technical capabilities, and what you can learn from the opportunities you are given.

We are hiring!

Meet Ra’ed Omar https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/meet-raed-omar/ https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/meet-raed-omar/#respond Tue, 03 Nov 2020 10:08:34 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=13265

Meet Ra’ed Omar, Judy’s father, avid traveller, Real Madrid fan and one of our brightest Team Leads’ at Aspire! Continue reading to find out more about his day-to-day.

Why did you choose IT?

At university, I decided to study Computer Information Systems. However, before making that decision, I actually wanted to study Architecture instead. I chose IT as I thought I could have better career opportunities and I definitely have made the right choice.

What are you particularly passionate about within your industry?

I am really passionate about developing processes and QA. I really like QA and continuously learning about how to improve products, processes and services with more quality.

Why Aspire?

Aspire was actually my first IT-related job. I didn’t know much about the company before joining, but I knew that they had an interesting Graduate Program, so I applied. I wanted to join a company where I could grow my career and luckily, I have been here for almost 8 years now.

What does your typical day look like?

I usually wake up early and play with my baby girl, Judy. Before the pandemic, sometimes I would arrive at the office a little bit late because she didn’t want me to leave. I start every morning by hearing her voice and playing with her. At work, I start my day by checking up on my emails and Slack. I then follow up with my team and check on what happened overnight, what our daily plan is, and what are our blockers. I follow up with the team throughout the day to check up on how the tasks are going. By 2 PM, I start preparing the results that need to be delivered to the client when they wake up as we work with a US client. By 5 PM, we start deployments and meetings for the rest of the afternoon. With the pandemic, my routine has stayed the same, even while working from home. In the evenings, I keep checking slack to stay connected with my team that works on staggered hours. I then have dinner with my family, watch TV or football matches. I am a big Real Madrid fan.

IMG_5199

Ra’ed with his beautiful wife, and daughter Judy

What do you value the most about the company?

I value many things, but the most important thing is that I feel appreciated here, I always get verbal recognition which is important, and I have been promoted many times throughout these years.

Employee_Of_the_Month

What is your favorite movie/series?

In movies, I like drama! Most people don’t, but I always like to watch and reflect. ‘The Life of David Gale’, is my favorite! Not many people know about this movie but I really enjoyed it (if you haven’t heard about it, you should add it to your list). I also prefer older movies, I just feel like the new ones aren’t as good.

What do you like to do in your free time?

For holidays, I always try to travel. Watch soccer matches, eat with my family, visit relatives and play card games with my friends (I am really good at Trex, which is a popular game in Jordan).

If you had to choose one programming language/technology to use for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I really enjoy Java and backend development. I love programming in Java.

What was the path to your current role at Aspire?

I can consider my growth process as really good. I started off as a Fresh Graduate and stayed as a Junior QA Resource for about 2 years. I then became a Senior QA and after 7 months I became a Supervisor. About a year later, I got promoted to Team Lead, which is still my current position.

What is something that will surprise your colleagues?

2 things really: first one is that I am not Jordanian, I am Palestinian, but I grew up in Jordan. Second one is that I spent a total of 6 months in Colombia for work back in 2017 and 2019, I learned a lot of Spanish too, which was nice.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

A black horse, I really like horses and I think they are powerful, intelligent, loyal and beautiful creatures.

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

Parachuting or skydiving. I am afraid of heights so I want to conquer my fears.

Does a particular time in your career stand out?

The first time, my Team Lead told me that he couldn’t travel to the US back in 2014, I was a Junior at the time and he gave me the opportunity to travel to the US for 2 months because he really trusted me. That really touched my heart. My visa got rejected the first time and the HR team tried again and I travelled.

What are your ambitions for Aspire?

I want Aspire to be the biggest IT Service Provider in the MENA region and we are definitely on our way there.

If a genie appeared and gave you three wishes, what would they be?

1 – Health for my family

2 – Travel to the South Pole

3 – To give everything that my daughter (Judy) wants

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

My marriage and building our family.

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

Getting promoted to Team Lead.

What superpower would you like to have?

To be super fast in everything, run as fast as a cheetah!

Mango! I love fruits and vegetables.

What’s your life philosophy?

Treat others as you want to be treated.

Do you think the pandemic has changed the way we work? Will this be the “new norm”?

Yes, I do believe so, regardless of the way this pandemic will end I think the way we work has definitely changed forever, working online has come to stay! However, face-to-face communication will still be needed and irreplaceable, so I believe most companies will adapt to a hybrid model, part-time working from home and part-time in the office.

Any tips for new graduates?

First of all, work and work hard. You will need to work a lot in the beginning in order to gain experience and improve, so focus on yourself. Second, you need to be very passionate and ambitious in order to achieve your goals, so don’t just think about salary and appreciation. These things come with experience and time.

Meet Adnan AlAkhrass https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/adnan-alakhrass/ https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/adnan-alakhrass/#respond Wed, 19 Aug 2020 12:31:38 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=13164

Meet Adnan AlAkhrass, bread lover, self-learner, La Casa de Papel fan and one of our brightest Architects and Senior Team Leads. Continue reading to find out more about his lifestyle.

What is your current position?

I started at Aspire as a Sr. IOS Developer. After a couple of months, I was assigned as a Team Lead for the Mobile Team, Personal Coaching and Chat projects Team Lead for Jordan. After my first year, I was promoted to Architect and Senior Team Lead which is my current position, and I have been with Aspire for almost 2 years now.

Why did you choose IT?

I studied Computer Science because I love coding and creating apps, and I am passionate about being part of developing apps that makes life much easier for others. I started my career as a game developer and later on I moved to app development.

What are you particularly passionate about within your industry?

I love coding and mobile is the best option for me. While AI is getting a lot of attention and I am super interested in this. In the future, I hope to transfer to the AI field.

Why Aspire?

I saw that Aspire was one of the best companies in Jordan, especially regarding work flow and integrations. The process itself and experience you will get at Aspire is more valuable than others in Jordan.

What did your typical day look like pre-lockdown?

I start my day after I work out. I would usually wake up, work out and come straight to the office. I was also used to working from home from time to time. To plan my work and my teams tasks, we work in an agile manner and in sprints. I have 2 sprints planned for the month with each sprint usually taking 2 weeks. I have tickets and tasks distributed throughout the working day and these 2 weeks, so I know exactly what I need to finish and deliver. I always finalize my daily tasks and try to help my team members when they have questions. After work, I used to visit my family or relatives and when I arrived home, I would play video games or watch movies. On weekends, I like to have an outdoor barbecue, spend time in contact with nature and eat sweets (I try and eat healthy during the week).

Adnan in contact with nature visiting the Kursunlu Waterfalls, Turkey.

What does your day look like now that you are working remotely?

My day is actually the same as it was pre-lockdown. Now, I actually get to save time driving to and back from the office and I use this extra time on reading and learning new topics related to my profession and passion. Working from home has enhanced the feeling of responsibility for me and helped manage and arrange my time throughout the day.

Do you have any productivity tips for people that are starting to work remote?

Software engineering, like many other professions can be done from the office, from home, from a cafe or any public or private places. It’s all about time and self-management! Wake up early, set up a room inside the house as it’s your own office (if possible), make sure you have a good wi-fi connection, avoid getting distracted by surroundings (use headphones if possible), set delivery milestones for that day and don’t overload yourself with tasks or deliveries. These can be tweaked throughout the week as you learn your work pace.

What do you value the most about the company?

The experience that I get is the most valuable thing for me and of course the great teams I am working with, the company culture, environment, benefits, and appreciation, as well.

What is your favorite movie or series?

Lord of the Rings (all of them) has to be my favorite movie and series for sure is La Casa de Papel (Money Heist).

What do you like to do in your free time?

Sometimes I go and play football, I also love reading blogs or books that I download from Udemy. I always try to learn anything related to IT, I am a really curious person. I have an app that I use which gives you 1 or 2 random topics each day and tells you something about it and I really enjoy this kind of thing, it’s called Pocket Mobile Application. I also like to travel when possible.

Adnan traveling to the Antalya High Mountains during winter.

If you had to choose one programming language to use for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Python! I believe everything moving forward is going to be related to AI and Machine Learning and Python is the best for that, at least at the moment.

What is something that will surprise your colleagues?

In my workplace, I usually don’t talk much, I just focus on work. Sometimes people think that I am not an easy person to talk to. When people meet me after work or at a work event, they think I am completely different, easy-going and they become surprised.

You have 10 seconds to impress someone. What do you tell them?

I created an app where you can control everything from your mobile app, your car, your home and anything you can imagine, are you interested in talking to me?

PS: I still haven’t created this app, but I doubt that they would say no!

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

I want to design and build my own house.

Does a particular time in your career stand out?

When I got promoted to an Architect position.

What are your ambitions for Aspire?

The mobile team started with 6 guys in Aspire and we are growing. I want to have more employees and have more time to sit with them and train them. I want Aspire to have the best mobile development hub in Jordan!

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

Achieving the dreams I had when I was a kid which was to have my own car and reach the salary I dreamt of, to work in a field I love. Now all that is left is to build my own house.

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

Being an architect and learning everything myself through self-learning. You don’t have to wait for training, there are a lot of resources on the web, you can learn by yourself, so don’t create restrictions to achieve what you want and when you start going down this path, you will find that many will offer a helping hand.

What superpower would you like to have?

Flying so that I could be able to see everything from above.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Bread, I LOVE BREAD!

Bread – food picture provided from Freepik

What’s your life philosophy?

Work hard to gain more.

How do you think the workforce will change post COVID-19?

When employees have a sense of responsibility, it doesn’t matter if they are working from home or from the office if they are doing their job properly. Humans adapt to surrounding conditions. This is in our nature as humans, I think most people have adapted quite well to this change.

Any tips for new graduates?

For new graduates, I always tell them to spend more time on themselves in order to gain more experience. Graduates usually spend more time having fun and they should spend time learning things because the time to have fun can come after. You need to have the passion to learn because you have the energy now.

Meet Ahlam Harb https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/ahlam-harb/ https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/ahlam-harb/#respond Thu, 23 Jul 2020 12:54:24 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=13133

Meet Ahlam Harb, avid guitar player, huge basketball fan, passionate UI/UX designer and one of Aspire’s most talented Quality & Design Coordinators.

Why did you choose IT?

I studied Computer Engineering. I have always felt that even though I am a computer Engineer, I have never been far from art and design. From the beginning, I was indecisive between choosing IT or Medicine. I ended up choosing IT, in order to stay close to my family (as to do Medicine, I would have to leave the country and study abroad) and to do something that the market was in need of. I am very happy with my choice and to have studied Computer Engineering.

What are you particularly passionate about within your industry?

After graduating, I felt I wasn’t far from art and design and my main interest became in User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX).

Why Aspire?

I had a friend from University who was working at Aspire and told me about the company (my friend Tuleen is still at Aspire by the way). I applied and joined after graduation having around one and a half years of previous work experience.

What was the path to your current role at Aspire?

I joined Aspire as a Quality Analyst. After less than a month, I was selected to join the Automation team. There was a separate Automation team at that time. After five months, I got the chance to travel to the US and work on a project with one of our clients as a Systems Analyst. Things went very well on that project, which led to many other projects and showed us the need of having a new team at Aspire for Systems Analysis. After that, we started doing some design work and the first designer joined the team which was a turning point. The consistent good work and client satisfaction for two and a half years showed clearly the need of having a separate Creative Team of designers and developers to do various UI/UX tasks. I was honored to lead this team for more than 6 years. Currently I am coordinating both Quality efforts and UI/UX design work for multiple projects.

What does your typical day look like?

My typical working day nowadays since the COVID-19 lockdown is that I wake up, make my coffee and check emails and any updates from the clients. After that, I have a daily standup meeting with my team, then with the directors and leaders to communicate the status of our work. Throughout the day, I sync up with all emails, team updates, client needs and assignments and I usually have meetings with the clients in the afternoon followed by completing different tasks and following up with issues.

My day-to-day didn’t change all that much working from home. I guess it’s just the face-to-face interactions. However, before the lockdown I used to go to the gym to exercise or swim. I tried to make exercising a habit, which has been hard to do from home.

What do you value the most about the company?

I have been at Aspire for more than 15 years, so I value the company a lot! It’s hard to say just one thing because there are so many things I love about Aspire, but since I have to choose, I really love the flexible and dynamic working environment. Employees always have a chance to keep learning. When I talk about my experience, I had a chance to work on many different things and to constantly challenge myself throughout the years.

Ahlam at Aspire office

What is your favorite movie or series?

I don’t have any specific favorite movie or series, however, I really love the Sci-Fi genre. Sci-Fi is what I prefer to watch, always.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love spending time with family, swimming, playing guitar (which is my favorite hobby), and I also love to run outdoors whenever I get a chance.

Ahlam loves running outdoors

What is something that will surprise your colleagues?

Most of the new Aspirers don’t know that my only sister also worked at Aspire before moving with her family to the US.

Ahlam with her sister Ghada Harb on the 10th year anniversary for Aspire

I am also a big fan of basketball. I used to play for my school and college. I love all of the Jordan national team matches and I try to go to as many matches as I can. The Jordanian Basketball Team is one of the best teams in Asia and they even qualified for the FIBA World Cup in China last year.

Ahlam with her nephew at (Jordan vs New Zealand) match – World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a dolphin because I love dolphins and they represent intelligence, balance, harmony and joy.

You have 10 seconds to impress someone. What do you tell them?

You can’t impress someone without knowing their interests, so I would try and find something out about them first.

What’s your favorite singer/song/band?

I love turkish music the most and my favorite singer is Gökhan Tepe.

Gökhan Tepe, Turkish singer.

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

I want to go skydiving in Dubai.

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

I was one of the very first graduates from the Jubilee School which was a pioneer pilot from the King Hussein Foundation for talented students in Jordan and the Middle East. I had 4 years of exceptional advanced learning opportunities along with a great chance to develop my personal and leadership skills.

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

Choosing a moment during these 15 years is hard, but leading the Creative Team for more than 6 years was the most memorable for me! It was a great chance and experience including the onsite visits with the creative team in New York.

What superpower would you like to have?

To be able to materialize dreams into reality, pretty much to be a full-time genie.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Fruits, I love fruits.

What’s your life philosophy?

Nothing worth having comes easy.

Why are you still at Aspire?

No one can know what the Aspire family actually means, except those who work here for a really long time. Everyone cares about each other like a family along with sharing experience and knowledge freely. We adopt an open door policy with regards to any matters and we always make sure important information and feedback reaches the leadership team. This policy comes from our Founder and Managing Director, Kaushal Shah. Till this day he walks across all floors and asks us how we are, knows employees by name. Even during the lockdown, he cares about us and has online calls to check on everyone. I am proud to be an Aspirer! We encourage openness and transparency for all employees.

How do you feel life is going to be post COVID-19?

At a certain moment, life will go back to normal, however in another shape with a ‘new normal’. New ways of thinking, of working, new challenges and new opportunities.

Any tips for new graduates?

I would advise them to not limit themselves with assumptions and expectations. Having a positive outlook is super important, so they should make the sky their limit and always keep learning.

Meet Tasneem Abu Khamseh https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/tasneem-abu-khamseh/ https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/tasneem-abu-khamseh/#respond Wed, 17 Jun 2020 12:19:54 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=13064

Meet Tasneem Abu Khamseh, a data science lover, chocoholic, Paulo Coelho fan and one of our bright Senior Software Engineers. Continue reading to find out more about her lifestyle before and during the lockdown.

Tasneem at the Aspire office.

Why did you choose IT?

Somehow, I have always been involved with IT because I decided to study Management Information Systems. Even though my course ended up being more related to business than IT, right after I graduated I got a job at Aspire as a Quality Analyst. After 4 years, I moved to the Software Engineering Team. It has been a great opportunity to build a good career. Currently, I work on databases and data. The world has become more data-driven, so I feel that my job is really important and adds a lot of value to our clients.

What are you particularly passionate about within your industry?

Data science fascinates me. I work with Oracle and SQL when it comes to databases. I want to grow and get more experience in BigQuery in order to develop myself as a data scientist.

Why Aspire?

My friend was working at Aspire and she told me about the company, how she enjoyed it and that they were looking for a Quality Analyst. I was fresh out of university, I got interviewed and luckily enough, I got hired.

What does your typical day look like when you work from the office?

In the morning, the first thing I do is to have coffee with my mom. After coffee and breakfast, I drive to work. Once I arrive, I check my emails and work on my daily tasks and tickets, these include: creating reports, sending data and investigation tickets in order to find issues. During my work breaks, I hang out with friends and colleagues. In the afternoon between 16:00-18:00, I have daily meetings with clients. After leaving the office, I hang out with my friends or I just go home, have dinner and watch movies with my family.

Tasneem with her mother.

How has your routine changed during COVID-19 (work and personal life)?

My routine has completely changed since the lockdown, now I wake up at 9:00AM instead of 8:00AM with no need to worry about choosing outfits or morning traffic. Every day, I start my day with a cup of Nescafe, while reading my emails. After that, I have a quick web meeting with my Team Lead in order to prioritize tasks and the tickets. I start on my tickets straight after and usually have client meetings in the afternoon. A good thing that came out of all of this is that I get the chance to have lunch with my family every single day, and before, only on weekends. Now that the lockdown in Jordan is more flexible and we can move around, sometimes after work I hang out with my friends. I have also been watching a lot of series. I completed the new season of ‘The 100’ in 2 days and now I’m waiting for the final season of ‘Attack on Titan’ to start.

What have the pros and cons been since working remotely this whole time?

I’m one of the people who actually likes to work from home, especially during Ramdan as it motivates me and gives me space and flexibility without much pressure. Before the lockdown, my working hours were usually fixed, but now it is more flexible. Sometimes I go out in the morning or afternoon to buy things and then I complete my work in the evenings.I really enjoy this kind of flexibility. The only con that I’m facing is the need for a face-to-face meeting with my Jordan team, we really loved our usual team meetings and web calls aren’t the same. I also really miss my morning breaks with my colleague and friend Doa’a.

What do you value the most about Aspire?

I love the friendly working environment. I had friends here before and I have developed so many real friendships as well. They aren’t just my colleagues, we are a family.

What is your favorite movie or series?

I love Japanese manga and anime series. I am currently watching Attack on Titan. I also really liked watching Friends and Black Mirror. I am such a Friends fan that I even bought a special mug.

Tasneem with her special Friends mug while watching Friends.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I watch a lot of series and I hang out with friends. I like reading a lot as well, especially Paulo Coelho and Agatha Christie books. Paulo Coelho is my favorite author and ‘The Devil and Miss Prym’ is my favorite book. Now during the lockdown, I am currently reading a book called ‘Ma’moun Al Kanouni’ written by Deek Al Jin.

What is the first thing you want to do when the lockdown is completely over?

I have a bit of a phobia of airplanes, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t like to travel! The first thing I want to do when the lockdown is over, is to go on vacation and travel.

Do you think life will go back to normal post COVID-19, or will there be a new normal?

In the end, life will go back to normal but it needs time, maybe a year, maybe two or even more than that. We just need to be patient.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a cat. I love cats, especially the fluffy ones.

You have 10 seconds to impress someone. What do you tell them?

I would just smile. Kindness impresses people.

Tasneem.

What’s your favorite song, singer or band?

I love arabic music, especially Amr Diab, however with the pandemic, my music taste has changed quite a bit and now I am really into Mahrajant songs.

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

Visit Italy, but not for a while as COVID-19 hit Italy very hard. I will wait until this is all over.

What are your ambitions for Aspire?

Aspire is a strong company in the IT market, our value is huge and we are growing a lot in Jordan. I want to be a part of this growth. I want to learn more about AWS and BigQuery in order to first become a Data Scientist and then an Architect in the future.

What, in your opinion, are the most important issues in the IT industry?

Speed of change and continuous changes. It changes practically every day, so it’s hard to keep up.

If a genie appeared and gave you three wishes, what would they be?

1 – For myself, my family and friends to always be healthy and never get sick

2 – To have a lot of money

3 – To have knowledge in everything, to become a genius

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

I graduated top of my class from University with a GPA average of 3.87 out of 4. I was very proud of myself and so was my family.

Tasneem on her graduation night in 2011.

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

Moving from QA to Engineering was a big move, I practically started over after 4 years and changed my career path. It was hard but it was worth it.

What superpower would you like to have?

To be able to read minds.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Chocolate, I am chocoholic. My favorite is Toblerone.

What’s your life philosophy?

My life philosophy comes from ‘The Alchemist (1988)’ – “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it” – Paulo Coelho. I truly believe in the law of attraction.

Most memorable moment at Aspire?

Hard to choose just one! On the 10th year anniversary for the company, I got a Shining Star award. I also won the Aspire Hackathon in 2018. I participated as a Data Scientist in the Smart Hackathon and we won! Another great moment was when I was promoted from QA to Software Engineering Team.

Tasneem with her teammates and Kaushal Shah (Aspire Managing Director) after winning the Hackathon.

Any tips for new graduates?

Keep learning! IT keeps changing so fast that new graduates need to keep updating themselves in order to be ready for the market. I still have a lot to learn too!

Meet Hussein Tirawi https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/hussein-tirawi/ Wed, 29 Apr 2020 22:14:35 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=12863

Meet Hussein Tirawi, an avid volunteer in the fight against cancer, runner, cyclist, optimist and our very own Software Engineer. Continue reading to find out more about his lifestyle pre and post-lockdown.

Why did you choose IT?

I studied Computer Science. It was a passion of mine since the 10th grade, so I knew exactly what I was going to study. Funny enough, all of my family members also studied CS.

What are you particularly passionate about within your industry?

I am a problem-solver and a doer. I like to see what I can actually create as a software engineer and after creating, I like to see how I can improve. In addition to that, and under the current circumstances with the lockdown, the IT industry is booming more than ever. The whole world knows how IT is the future, how remote work is actually working and how service providers like Aspire and developers can help businesses to survive.

Why Aspire?

I joined Aspire as a fresh graduate in 2015 for about 8 months and then I got a job offer to join another company. I actually rejoined Aspire in July, 2019. I rejoined the company because of the culture, the latest technologies and how much it enriches the employees’ knowledge regarding the market needs. It was the best choice I have ever made and it’s definitely one of the best companies to work for in Jordan.

What does your typical day look like?

Before the lockdown, my day consisted of: waking up between 6-7 AM, having breakfast, drinking warm water with honey, eating eggs with olives for breakfast (I quit smoking 5 years ago, and ever since then I have been motivated to keep up a healthy lifestyle). Showering after breakfast, praying and coming straight to the office. When arriving at the office, checking emails, slack and JIRA for tickets, having lunch and meetings with clients in the afternoon. Usually after work, I would just go home, spend time and have dinner with my family, watch series and try to sleep early, usually before midnight. During the lockdown, I try to maintain my daily routine, so I wake up in the morning and do what I was used to doing. However, now I use the time I used to spend getting to the office, to work out and exercise before starting to work. I take a break and go for a walk before my meetings in the afternoon, this helps keep me sane. The lockdown has also been a chance to focus even more on self-development and online education as well.

What is a negative point from the lockdown?

Even though I am a techie, I am an extrovert. I really miss the chaos of everyday life; doing hikes and gathering with my friends. Ironically, I also miss things that I would have never imagined, such as the noise from the neighborhood children while they are playing outside, and also, for the first time, I miss eating junk food.

Hussein pre-lockdown going on hikes in Wadi Mujib

What is a positive that came from the lockdown?

Since I am working remotely and not commuting, I get to spend more time undistracted. This makes me more productive and organized. Another bright side of the lockdown is being relieved from road traffic, this ensures that I start my day with full energy, instead of coming to the office stressed.

Hussein’s office at home

What do you value the most about the company?

I really value the knowledge sharing between team members. I also feel that at Aspire, we can communicate freely with our Directors and C-level staff. This is great because it makes us feel comfortable, we feel that we are a part of a team and we are treated with a lot of respect. Lastly, if you need help, you will always get it, my colleagues are very helpful.

What is your favorite movie/series?

My favorite movies of all time are: ‘Interstellar’, ‘The Hunger Games’, ‘UP’ and ‘The Avengers’. With regards to TV series, I really enjoyed watching: ‘You’, ‘Arrow’, ‘Vikings’ and ‘La Casa de Papel’.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Currently during lockdown, I spend my time working out at home, cycling solo, taking walks and cleaning the house. Pre-lockdown, I used to spend my free time going hiking and cycling for at least one hour. I also always try to volunteer at The King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center. I volunteer by helping and playing with children, along with also doing some office/admin tasks. During my last volunteering activity, I had to wrap and distribute apples on World Cancer day. Every year we also have a Summer Camp, where I dress up as a clown and make them smile. I have been a volunteer for the past 7 years and it’s a huge passion of mine.

Hussein volunteering at the KHCF Summer Camp

If you had to choose one programming language to use for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

JAVASCRIPT. I love to program in JavaScript! I like Java, but I prefer JavaScript because I can do more things in terms of both backend and frontend

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

A horse, horses are motivational. When you are around a horse, there’s just something that makes you want to be a better person. They make you want to try harder. Being around a horse can also put you at ease. Once you’ve experienced the power of being in the presence of these amazing creatures, it’s hard to imagine your life without them.

You have 10 seconds to impress someone. What do you tell them?

I like your eyes and you have a great smile.

What’s your favorite song/singer/band?

Currently, I love ‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones and I, it’s always in my head. I also enjoy listening to Rodrigo y Gabriela, they are a Mexican acoustic guitar duo.

What is one thing you want to do before it is too late?

I want to get a Masters Degree and I want to visit Cordoba in Spain (I really love Spanish architecture, music and their history).

What are your ambitions for Aspire?

Aspire is continuously growing. Every year we get bigger clients, great logos and companies that work with the latest technologies. I just want to do my best, I want to keep learning and growing with the company by getting more and more certifications.

If a genie appeared and gave you three wishes, what would they be?

1- To end all diseases and viruses in the world, especially cancer.

2- To have the power to make each child smile.

3- For all of my loved ones to have good health always.

What’s your biggest personal achievement?

I won a prize for being the most loyal volunteer at the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF). The foundation has over 4000 volunteers, so I was very happy and honored.

Hussein with the KHCF Most Loyal Volunteer Prize.

What’s your biggest professional accomplishment?

That’s a good question. I find that small things make a big difference. I love completing tasks. I create challenges for myself so that I can feel accomplished professionally every single day and every time that I finish a task or complete a project.

What superpower would you like to have?

The power of healing.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Potatoes! I love all forms of potatoes, baked, grilled and fried.

What’s your life philosophy?

We live by what we give. The secret of living is giving.

What was your most memorable moment at Aspire?

Back in 2015, in July during Ramadan, I was finishing a task, so I stayed late at work. My director at the time (Feras) saw that I was fasting and he offered to drive me home.  He arrived late for his own Iftar to make sure that I ate on time. That really meant a lot and I felt really appreciated.

What is the first thing you want to do post lockdown?

Coughing in public without worrying about anybody judging me (I think this will take a while though). Oh, and going on hikes with my friends.

Hussein’s love for hiking and nature.

Any tips for new graduates?

LEARN! Learn as much as you can. You need to benefit from the things you learn at university. Try to graduate and master at least one programming language and focus on your training. Now with COVID-19, there are a lot of free online courses that you can benefit from, this time is very precious. Take the chance to develop your skills as much as you can, and if you can start working on an ecommerce project go for it. If you join Aspire, come prepared to learn, because you will learn something new every day.

Virtual Onboarding during the COVID-19 Lockdown https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/virtual-onboarding-during-the-covid-19-lockdown/ https://aspire.jo/blog/life-aspire/virtual-onboarding-during-the-covid-19-lockdown/#respond Mon, 20 Apr 2020 13:29:09 +0000 https://aspire.jo/?p=12739

It is an understatement to state that most companies have been affected by the worldwide pandemic. Hiring, interviewing and onboarding during such an uncertain period is a hard thing, but Aspire has been able to keep business running “as usual”. In order to understand how our hiring and onboarding processes have changed during this lockdown, our Digital Marketing Manager, Camila Luz, spoke (virtually of course!) to our Director of Infrastructure and Support, Harsh Shah and our Director of HR, Laith Al Sarie.

How has onboarding changed since COVID-19?

Harsh: Significant changes have been implemented in terms of orientation, on the job training, employee engagement activities and IT setup for new hires. Assessment methods of employee fitment have also altered, now that we are hiring team members without any in-person interaction.

Laith: Onboarding of course has become entirely virtual, with a few challenges. Onboarding is about putting all facts in front of the candidate where he/she will set the expectations. The first day and the first week are very essential for every new hire and onboarding process. I believe that the first impression is a lasting impression. That’s why we need to pay close attention to the smallest details.

What is the online onboarding process like at the moment?

Harsh:The process stays the same, the procedures and means have changed – e.g. remote training sessions, interactive and collaborative chat rooms/channels, etc.

Laith: It’s all done virtually at the moment; the process starts before the joining date where the HR team makes sure to contact new joiners and guide them through every step of the process. On the joiners first day, the orientation is done virtually.  Our IT department plays an integral part during this phase as they make sure that the candidate has the right device(s) to connect with other team members efficiently.

How have you been managing employee engagement during this lockdown period?

Laith: Employee engagement is very critical at this stage. We have created a strong communication plan with everyone.  For example, our Founder and Managing Director, Kaushal Shah, participated in a video conference with ALL employees in the company and spoke and heard from each and every one of them. Team leads and managers also meet with their team members on a regular basis to check on them and to follow up on different tasks. A few activities have been shared with our employees such as: Share your Remote Working Story, Appreciation Thursday, Trivia Games and Aspire + Kids meeting (where employees get to bring their kids to virtual meetings). We have also been sharing the latest news from the Jordanian Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) with our employees to keep them informed of the latest developments/updates.

What has changed in terms of tools and training?

Harsh: A lot has changed in terms of tools – those that facilitate higher collaboration, knowledge-sharing and activity-tracking are increasingly in demand. Also reporting tools that help track employee productivity and engagement levels are highly sought after. Unified endpoint and threat management systems are also in high demand to counteract the increased possibility of Information Security (InfoSec) breaches. In the context of a full lockdown, we see facilities like Desktop-as-a-Service adding a lot of value and helping to ensure new staff members get deployed and become productive with minimum logistical hassles.

With regards to training; reskilling and upskilling will be more important than ever. Companies will focus more on virtual training methodologies and this will continue after the lockdown, in my opinion. In this context, training and reminding people that they need to maintain security compliance while working remotely is also very important. At Aspire, we have undertaken an initiative to refresh the basics of safe working while working remotely in the last few weeks to online sessions, fun quizzes and so on.

Do you have any tips for other companies trying to recruit, hire and onboard during this period?

Harsh: I would recommend to spend more time interviewing on behavioral and value fitment, apart from just job role requirements. It would also be good to ensure the potential candidate’s ability to work, communicate and deliver effectively, when WFH (working from home) for prolonged periods of time. An extended and exciting opportunity exists for strategic hires, given that there are many companies globally churning their talent pool.

Laith: The first of the base requirements would be to make sure to digitize paperwork as hiring and onboarding traditionally tend to be heavy with paperwork. There are many useful tools available out there to help with this. It would also be good to organize and arrange all hardware and software needs carefully before the joining date as deliveries are taking longer now than usual. Also make sure to communicate with the employee regularly in order to express and communicate the company culture.  Lastly, I agree with Harsh that companies need to invest more in “cultural and behavioral fit” as you can learn a specific skill, but it’s hard to learn attitude.

What tips do you have for candidates preparing for a virtual interview?

Harsh: It would be good to dress appropriately, just like if you were attending an in-person interview. Test and ensure the right tools are available as is the internet connectivity. Be prepared to undertake or showcase a quick-fire technical task/demo.

Laith: Do your research! Read about the company and review study material if needed for the role. Get to know your interviewers beforehand, go on LinkedIn and check their background, qualifications etc. It’s good to create a human connection and build some rapport. Like Harsh mentioned, it’s important to dress smart.  Make sure to test your device and your internet connection before the call. Choose a quiet place for the interview and last but not least, be calm and confident.

Overall what do you think about this phase of digital engagement? Will things go back to normal post lockdown?

Harsh: Organizations and individuals were forced to quickly adapt for a prolonged WFH situation. Post lockdown, both companies and employees will be looking to take advantage of the benefits of WFH while balancing them with a ‘back to normal’ routine to deal with the disadvantages. Organizations with robust abilities to hire, train, engage and retain a remote talent pool will lead the growth in terms of capability. Small and medium companies will be looking at hot-desk setups, co-working spaces and other flexible arrangements to increase efficiency. Organizations will also rethink their overall business and delivery models with increased usage of automation in various functions and adoption of cloud based solutions within a secure work paradigm, to ensure better readiness to adapt to such unforeseen scenarios.

Laith: Not all companies have prepared for “digital engagement/digital transformation” or have the capability to do so. It varies from one industry to another. We have already seen companies that could not manage this and others trying to catch up in their digital transformation journey. I believe that after the lockdown, things will be more dynamic in all aspects. WFH will be the “new normal” and companies will prepare themselves more efficiently for this. Working from an office could become an optional aspect for flexible companies. Typical brick-and-mortar shops could focus more on e-commerce platforms and analyze the consumer behavior. Companies and factories who depend on blue collar employees might adopt strict health and safety measures along with work/life balance policies.

Where and how many people have been hired and onboarded since the beginning of the lockdown and how many more are you planning to hire in the next few months?

Laith: Without getting into specific numbers, what I can confirm is that since the lockdown started, we have hired and onboarded several new employees, both in Jordan as well as outside of Jordan. We have many positions open at the moment, so please keep an eye out on our careers page.

In this current reality of COVID-19, now more than ever our customers are relying on us to help them adapt and continue or even start their digital transformation journey. We believe that in order to deliver the best solutions, we need to build high impact teams. Our HR team is working really hard to keep on hiring the best talent out there.
